The Reanimation of Item No. 745: Last Century Wireless Apparatus

In the summer of this year, a RCA Victor 4-X-644 table-top radio — manufactured in the year 1956, its provenance otherwise undocumented — came into my possession by means I need not elaborate upon here. What follows is a record of its restoration: the careful stripping and refinishing of the exterior to something nearer its original condition, and the quieter, more unsettling work of replacing its aging tubes and wiring with modern components — a necessity, I tell myself, for safety and function.

Arrival of the package

The delivery, which was left with some haste, remained untouched for several days. Having been relieved of the weeks pressing matters I moved the device into my workshop. Closer inspection, and no little research, reveal it to be a Victor 4-X-644 table-top radio — manufactured in the year 1956 by RCA. The only providence allowed to me is that it was manufactured in Camden New Jersey. A glyph on the back leads one to believe it produces the tone of the "golden throat" as certified by one J L (last name illegible) which the glyph goes to assure, holds considerable prestige at the RCA Radio Division.

Revelation of the innards

Maybe it was the late hour, maybe it was the emerging regret of tampering with something so ancient, but a combination of reverence and awe settled over me. Seven decades ago, a worker in Camden NJ had assembled these components. My hands were the first to touch this assembly since a worker, most likely passed into the beyond at this point, None the less, I proceeded with the plan.
